|---|---|---|
| Detergent Definition | A surfactant or mixture of surfactants with cleaning and refining properties. Chemically, it is the salt of a strong base and strong acid. Its anion or cation has a long chain of carbon atoms, typically 12 to 18. | |
| Soap Composition | Common soaps are mixtures of salts of higher fatty acids ( to ). | |
| Soap Action (Cleaning Mechanism) | Soap removes grease through the process of emulsification. | |
| Soap Manufacturing Process | Soap is made by saponification, which involves the conversion of fat or oil into soap and glycerol by the action of heat in the presence of alkali (like caustic soda or potash). | |
| Types of Soap | Saturated fats yield hard soap, while vegetative oils (unsaturated fats) yield soft soap. |

|---|---|---|
| Use in Hard Water | Detergents can be used effectively in hard water because their calcium and magnesium salts are soluble in water. | |
| Lather Formation in Hard Water | Synthetic detergents create more lather in hard water because they form soluble calcium and magnesium salts, unlike soap which forms insoluble precipitates (scum). | |

|---|---|---|
| Sodium Sulfate Additive | Mixed into washing powders to maintain the basicity of the powder. | |
| Sodium Silicate Additive | Mixed into washing powders to make the powder crystalline so that it stays in dry form (maintaining dryness). It is also added to soap bars to increase durability and prevent rapid drying. | |
