Nobel Laureate Michael Kremer Appointed World Bank Chief Economist

The World Bank Group appointed Nobel laureate Michael Kremer as its new Chief Economist, with his tenure set to begin on October 1, 2026.

He succeeds Indermit Gill and will lead the World Bank Group’s research division.
His research mandate includes poverty reduction, healthcare, education and access to clean water.
