# Meghalaya Opens Centre of Excellence for Eri Weaving ### Why in News? Meghalaya inaugurated a Centre of Excellence for **Eri Weaving** at Nongpoh to preserve traditional weaving skills while creating livelihood and tourism opportunities. ### Why is Eri silk special? - Eri silk is often called 'Ahimsa' or '**Peace Silk**' because the fibre can be processed without killing the silkworm inside the cocoon. - The centre will provide training and design support to weavers, spinners and rearers, while linking the craft with textile tourism. - Meghalaya and the wider Northeast have a strong tradition of Eri silk production. ### Exam Connect - **Eri silk** → also called Ahimsa/**Peace Silk** - **National Handloom Day** → August 7
