Why in News?

The Department of Consumer Affairs amended the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011 on July 06, 2026, to streamline verification of high-capacity weighing instruments.

Key Points

• The amendment applies to weighing instruments with a maximum capacity of one tonne and above.
• Mandatory standard weights for verification reduced from 50% to one-fifth (20%) of maximum capacity.
• Earlier, at least one tonne or 50% (whichever greater) was required before substitution with constant loads.
• New repeatability-based verification ensures consistency and stability using fewer weights.
• Aims to promote Ease of Doing Business by lowering verification costs and operational downtime for industries, warehouses, and weighbridge operators.
