India's First Geothermal Wells Commissioned at Puga Valley, Ladakh

Why in News?
India's first two geothermal wells were commissioned at Puga Valley in Ladakh on July 17, 2026. They were developed by the ONGC Energy Centre at an altitude above 14,000 feet.
Key Points
Both wells were drilled to a target depth of 1,000 metres, with a maximum temperature of 135 degrees Celsius recorded at 400 metres.
Puga Valley lies in the Changthang region of south-eastern Ladakh and is India's most promising geothermal field due to its high-temperature hot springs.
