Turkey became the 71st country to join the Artemis Accords, a framework for cooperation in the peaceful exploration of the Moon, Mars and deep space.
Key Details
- The Artemis Accords build on principles of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
- They cover issues such as sharing scientific data, emergency assistance to astronauts, interoperability of space systems and preservation of historic sites on celestial bodies.
- Turkey became the 7th West Asian country to join the framework.
- Turkey’s space programme also includes AYAP-1, an uncrewed lunar mission, and its first astronaut Alper Gezeravcı, who travelled to the ISS in 2024.
