Why in News?
Tamil Nadu notified three elephant corridors in the Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary to protect movement routes used by elephants between habitats in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Why are elephant corridors important?
- An elephant corridor is a narrow stretch of habitat that connects larger forest areas and allows animals to move between them.
- Protecting such links helps maintain genetic exchange and reduces the risk of elephants being trapped in fragmented habitats, which can increase human-elephant conflict.
- The notified corridors lie within reserved forests in the Hosur Forest Division and form part of the wider trans-Cauvery elephant landscape.
