NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on September 1, 2026 to study dark energy, dark matter and exoplanets.
Key Details
The telescope was launched on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Its very wide field of view will help map billions of galaxies and search for large numbers of exoplanets—planets that orbit stars outside our Solar System.
It uses infrared observations and is designed to study how the Universe is expanding and how unseen matter shapes galaxies.
The telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer, often called the 'Mother of Hubble'.
