Why in News?
The Gujarat Forest Department launched a JICA-supported programme to collect and process plastic waste around Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, a Ramsar wetland.
How will the programme work?
- Local volunteers called 'Swachhta Praharis' will help collect and segregate plastic waste from villages around the sanctuary.
- A dedicated collection and processing centre has been created to prevent plastic from entering the wetland ecosystem.
- The project links community livelihoods with conservation of an important migratory-bird habitat.
