Why in News?
The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was observed on August 9 to highlight the rights, cultures and well-being of indigenous communities worldwide.
Why is August 9 observed?
- The date commemorates the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982.
- The United Nations General Assembly formally established the observance in 1994.
- It should not be confused with the International Day of Older Persons or other UN observances with similar awareness objectives.
