Why in News?
Depalpur became the first city in India to achieve Zero Legacy Waste status under the Swachh Shehar Jodi initiative after remediating 1,250 metric tonnes of accumulated waste.
Key Details
- Legacy waste refers to old garbage that has accumulated over years at dumpsites; remediation means scientifically processing and clearing that waste.
- Under Swachh Shehar Jodi, stronger urban local bodies mentor other cities through an 'Each One Teach One' model; Indore acted as Depalpur’s mentor.
- The project recovered recyclable material, sent Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) for co-processing in cement plants and converted the cleared dumpsite into a green/community space.
- The initiative is linked to the broader goal of making cities garbage-free under Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban 2.0.
