| Wave Definition | A wave involves the transfer of energy without the transfer of matter. | |
| Mechanical Waves | Can be produced only in media that possess elasticity and inertia. Three Types Transverse Wave Longitudinal Wave Surface Wave | |
| Transverse Waves | Particles move perpendicular to the wave direction (e.g., water waves, seismic S waves). They do not originate in gases but only on the surface layer of liquids. Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves. | |
| Longitudinal Waves | Particles move parallel to the wave direction (e.g., sound waves). | |
| Surface waves | Particles move in circular motions at surfaces or interfaces (e.g., ocean waves). | |
| Wavelength | The distance between two successive crests or two successive troughs in a transverse wave. | |
| Sitar Sound Vibrations | When a string is plucked, a transverse stationary wave is formed along the wire. | U.P. R.O./A.R.O. (Pre) 2021 |
| X-Rays Nature | X-rays are electromagnetic waves. They are not deflected by electric and magnetic fields. | |
| X-Ray Machine Inventor | Wilhelm Rontgen invented the X-Ray Machine. | U.P. P.C.S. (Pre) 2018, UPPCS (Pre) 2005 |
| Concept | What to remember | Asked in UPPCS |
|---|---|---|
| Velocity of EM Waves | The velocity of all electromagnetic waves is the same, traveling at the speed of light in a vacuum, approximately 3 x 108 ms-1 | |
| Energy/ Wavelength Relation | Electromagnetic waves with the shortest wavelength range have higher energy. | |
| Wave Frequency Order (Increasing) |

| Remote Control (TV) | Uses Infrared Rays. | UPPCS (Pre) 2013, U.P. U.D.A./L.D.A. (Pre) 2010, UPPCS (Pre) 2010, UPPCS (Pre) 2002, UPPCS (Mains) 2013 |
| Night Vision Apparatus | Uses Infrared waves (which have longer wavelengths than visible light). | |
| Remote Sensing |
| Radio waves < Infrared rays < Visible rays < X-rays. |
| U.P. R.O./A.R.O. (Pre) 2023 |
| Cosmic Rays | Not electromagnetic waves; they are immensely high-energy charged particles (traveling near the speed of light). | UPPCS (Pre) 2005 |
|---|
| Radiation (Heat Transfer) | Radiation is the mode of heat transfer that does not require a medium (unlike convection or conduction). | U.P. R.O./A.R.O. (Mains) 2017 |
|---|
| Radio Wave Deflection | Radio waves are deflected back to Earth by the Ionosphere. | UPPCS (Pre) 1998, U.P. Lower Sub. (Pre) 1998 |
|---|
| Modulation | The process of superimposing any information (audio or video messages) on carrier radio waves. |
|---|
| Radar | An object-detection system that uses radio waves to determine the range, angle, or velocity of objects. |
