World Senior Citizens Day was observed on August 21 to recognise the contributions of older people and draw attention to their health and well-being.
How did the observance begin?
- The day originated in the United States after President Ronald Reagan proclaimed August 21 as National Senior Citizens Day in 1988.
- It later came to be observed more widely as World Senior Citizens Day.
- It is different from the UN's International Day of Older Persons, which is observed on October 1.
