Why in News?
Varsha Ashok Aglawe took charge as the 54th Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), becoming the first woman to head the organisation in its 176-year history.
Why is the appointment notable?
- Aglawe is a palaeontologist with more than three decades of experience in geoscience and joined GSI in 1992.
- Before becoming Director General, she headed GSI's Eastern Region as Additional Director General.
- GSI is India's major geoscientific survey organisation, involved in geological mapping and exploration of mineral resources.
