Why in News?
The President promulgated a regulation allowing the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to hold bench sittings within the Union Territory of Ladakh.
What will change for Ladakh?
- Judges of the common High Court can now hold sittings at locations in Ladakh designated by the Chief Justice, subject to the prescribed approval process.
- The aim is to reduce the time and cost faced by litigants who otherwise have to travel to Jammu or Srinagar for High Court matters.
- Ladakh continues to share the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh; the regulation does not create a separate High Court.
