Why in News?
India observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, or Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, on August 14 to remember the human suffering caused by the Partition of 1947.
What does the day commemorate?
- The observance honours people who lost their lives, homes and livelihoods during the violence and mass displacement accompanying Partition.
- It was announced in 2021 and is observed each year on the eve of Independence Day.
- The focus is remembrance of the human cost of Partition rather than celebration of a political event.
