Why in News?
OPEC+ has approved an increase in oil production of about 188,000 barrels per day (bpd) for September 2026, completing the full reversal of the 1.65 million bpd voluntary output cut agreed in 2023.
What does this decision mean?
The decision was led by seven core members: Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Algeria, Kazakhstan, and Oman. The UAE, part of the original 2023 agreement, exited OPEC in May 2026.
A separate layer of production curbs, totaling 2 million bpd introduced in 2022, will remain active until the end of 2026. The committee also flagged supply disruptions from the Gulf, Russia, and Kazakhstan, citing risks to global crude supplies from damaged energy infrastructure.
Looking ahead, OPEC+ is reviewing member capacities to set new production baselines and quotas from 2027 onward. The next monitoring meeting is scheduled for September 6, 2026.
