Why in News?
Killai in Cuddalore district has become Tamil Nadu's first fully operational Climate Resilient Village (CRV) under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission (TNCCM). It is the first of 11 such villages identified by WRI India to be fully implemented.
Key Points
The project is funded through the District Climate Change Mission (DCCM) and Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) funds.
A 3-km stretch of the Buckingham Canal was restored to improve tidal water exchange, and mangrove restoration in the Pichavaram ecosystem was enhanced as a natural cyclone defence.
A solar-powered e-boat was introduced at the Pichavaram Boat House for emission-free transport through mangrove creeks.
Hybrid solar power systems and cool-roof interventions were installed at the Panchayat office and community centres.
Scientific beekeeping was launched for Irula tribals to secure sustainable livelihoods, along with a Green School programme on tree planting and waste management.
