Why in News?
Italy has temporarily suspended the Schengen border-free travel arrangement with Spain for one month after a significant migrant influx into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
What does the suspension involve?
- Mandatory passport and identity checks have been reintroduced for all travelers entering Italy from Spain, specifically for those arriving by air or sea.
- Italian border police will conduct targeted, selective checks on non-EU nationals.
- Italy also reached an agreement with France to strengthen security checks along the Franco-Italian land border.
Why is this significant?
- The trigger is the entry of thousands of migrants into Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa, from Morocco. Ceuta shares a direct land border with Morocco, making it a key entry point for migration into Europe.
- Under the Schengen Agreement, member states may temporarily reintroduce internal border controls if there is a serious threat to public order or national security.
