India reported at UNCCD COP17 that 21.76 million hectares of degraded land had been brought under restoration between 2011 and 2020.
How does this fit India’s restoration target?
- India has committed under the Bonn Challenge to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030.
- Restoration includes activities such as afforestation, ecosystem recovery and improved land management, with programmes like the Green India Mission and CAMPA contributing to the effort.
- The work is intended to improve soil, biodiversity and rural livelihoods while combating land degradation.
