The government outlined a roadmap to raise India's nuclear power capacity to 100 GWe by 2047, including deployment of indigenous Small Modular Reactors.
What is the nuclear roadmap?
- India plans to operationalise five indigenous Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by 2033.
- SMRs are smaller nuclear reactors designed for modular construction and potentially more flexible deployment than conventional large reactors.
- The roadmap also links long-term nuclear expansion with India's three-stage nuclear programme and use of domestic thorium resources.
