Why in News?
The nine-member crew of IASV Triveni was felicitated for completing the first-ever tri-services all-women global circumnavigation sailing expedition, 'Samudra Pradakshina', on July 30, 2026.
What makes this expedition historic?
- The voyage was flagged off on September 11, 2025, and concluded in Mumbai on July 22, 2026, after 314 days at sea.
- The crew covered approximately 25,500 nautical miles across four oceans, crossing the Equator twice and the International Date Line.
- They rounded the three Great Capes – Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn, and the Cape of Good Hope – and navigated the challenging Drake Passage.
- This achievement earned the crew membership in the prestigious Cape Horners fraternity, an honor reserved for sailors who round Cape Horn.
Why is this significant for India?
- It is the first global circumnavigation with a joint crew from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, highlighting tri-service jointness.
- The expedition fulfilled internationally recognized criteria by crossing all meridians of longitude, and served as a powerful message of India's 'Nari Shakti'.
- Conducted aboard the Indian Army Sailing Vessel (IASV) Triveni, the mission showcased India's indigenous capabilities during port calls worldwide.
